The freshwater eels at the Stilbaai Information Bureau are the only tame eels in the country and have apparently been living there for the past 125 years!
Visitors can feed these freshwater eels daily (Monday to Saturday and also on Sundays during the December holiday) at 11:00. (A nominal fee is payable)
There are four species of freshwater eels in South Africa of which the Anguilla can be found in Stilbaai. Two of these species are living in the spring at the Palinggat Homestead – the Mossambica (Longfin eel) and the Marmorata (Madagascar mottled eel). There are about 10 to 15 eels that live deep in the rock pools. Brochures with more information are available at the information centre.
Have tea and something to eat under the huge milk wood trees and enjoy the relaxing atmorphere at the Palinggat Homestead
