Stilbaai, a relaxed coastal village on the southern Cape coast, just 26 kilometres off the N2 highway that also forms part of the Garden Route, is the first of nine finalists in the Kwêla ‘Town of the Year’ (Dorp van die Jaar) competition that is being broadcasted on Kyknet. Stilbaai has reached the final of this competition in the past and this holiday and retirement village in the Hessequa region is now pulling out all the stops to claim the title.
Stilbaai is probably one of the smallest towns with an estimated figure of between 5 000 and 6 000 permanent residents, but this popular holiday town looks totally different when thousands of holidaymakers visit it during the December summer break. Stilbaai has also been the town where many visitors have been spending their holidays for generations and interesting stories can be told about family holidays from as early as the late 1800’s.
Stilbaai is also a popular retirement village and with a strong, yet relatively small industrial area and various businesses, everyday life in town goes its (relaxed) way.
Some excitement has been added to the daily routines now that Stilbaai stands a chance to be the ‘Town of the Year’. A group of volunteers together with Stilbaai Tourism and Dries de Beer as chairman, got the ball rolling in an effort to get as many votes when the voting lines open on Sunday, 26 May.
Organisations, businesses and residents will be working together during the next few weeks so that when it is time to vote, everyone who loves Stilbaai as well as neighbouring towns in the Hessequa region and even the Western Cape, vote for Stilbaai by sending up to 30 sms’s per phone number. Voting will take place from Sunday evening (26 May) to 12:00 on Friday, 31 May.
Marketing on social media has already played a huge role and the announcement on Sunday (31 March) on Stilbaai Tourism’s Facebook page that Stilbaai is the Western Cape winner, has reached 77 800 people on Facebook while this post were shared 611 times.
The announcement has received positive feedback in general and many people in the tourism and business industry are of the opinion that the extra exposure and additional marketing will be to the benefit of the town and that it will encourage much needed tourism. The cold and wet winter months are only weeks away and these are the most challenging for tourism and businesses in Stilbaai. If the exposure attracts more visitors and tourists especially during these months, it will be a much needed economical boost for the town that will be favourable to all.
Stilbaai Tourism thanks everyone who is involved in the ‘Town of the Year’ voting campaign as well as the Hessequa Municipality for their support.
Various activities are planned for the next few weeks. Visit the Facebook pages of Stilbaai Tourism and Hessequa – The Explorer’s Garden Route to be part of the excitement.
- The sms voting lines open on 26 May 2019 after the Kwêla ‘Dorp van die Jaar’ program and stays open until Friday, 31 May at 12:00.
- Sms the word STILBAAI to 33157 (during the voting week only).
- Up to 30 sms’s per phone number are allowed.
- Cost per sms is R1.50
The buzz in Stilbaai is not only because of the two long weekends in April – it is because of Stilbaai winning the Western Cape round of the Kyknet Kwêla television program, Dorp van die Jaar (Town of the Year) and having a foot in the door of being the winner.
The banners at the turn-off from the N2 to Stilbaai are announcing the news and will serve as a reminder to vote for STILBAAI from Sunday, 26 May to Friday, 31 May when the sms lines close at midday. Up to 30 sms’s per number are allowed at R1.50 per sms.
In the meantime, residents, businesses, holidaymakers and visitors who love Stilbaai, are working hard for the town to win this title that will mean a lot for tourism for Stilbaai as well as the Hessequa region.
Duhne Liebenberg from Namo Health Stilbaai took this photo to show their support for the project.

- Minder as 500 000 inwoners het
- Nie ’n streekswenner in die laaste twee jaar was (2017: Mosselbaai, Margate, Nespruit/Mbombela, Hoopstad, Tzaneen, Vanderbijlpark, Barkley-Oos, Van Zylsrus, Gobabis. 2018: Fochville, Wakkerstroom, Jeffreysbaai, Montagu, Upington, Mariental, Parys, St. Lucia).
On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, March 27th and 28th, the fourth annual Stilbaai Craft Beer, Gin & Wine Expo will be taking place in the community hall and with wines from 21 selected wine estates as well as craft beer from various breweries and unique craft gins, this Tasting Experience is not to be missed.
The Craft Beer, Gin & Wine Expo is hosted by Stilbaai Kelders, the wine boutique with more than 750 wines, the widest selection of craft beers, 25 craft gins and 30 MCC’s. This liquor store specialises in carefully selected wines of which some wines and even craft beers, whiskies and brandies can not be easily found in Hessequa or even the Garden Route.
This year, eight of the 21 wine estates will be showcasing their wines at the expo for the very first time. The new exhibiting estates include Marianne Wines, Muratie Wine Estate as well as Hartenberg and Kaapzicht Wine Estates from the Stellenbosch area; Prevoir Wines from the Robertson Wine Valley; Lomond from the Cape Agulhas region; Glen Carlou from Paarl and Bonnievale Wines from the banks of the Breede River.
These wine estates will find themselves in the company of Strandveld Winery from the Bredasdorp area; Jan Harmsgat Wines from the Swellendam area; De Krans Wines, a favourite from Calitzdorp; Hermanuspietersfontein from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley at Hermanus; Kleine Zalze Wines from Stellenbosch; Flying Cloud Wines; Delheim Wines; Bon Courage Estate, Kranskop Wines and Excelsior Wine Estate from the Robertson Wine Valley and Zandvliet Wine Estate, the home of Shiraz in South Africa.
Baleia Wines, with vineyards in the Vermaaklikheid area and the cellars just outside Riversdale, will be representing the Hessequa area while another ‘local’ wine, Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar from the Mossel Bay area, will also be showcasing their wines.
A total of 131 wines will be available for tasting and for sale.
Expo visitors will be treated to nine different gins from five distillers (Boplaas, Six Dogs Gin, Black Mountain Gin, Clemengold Gin and Harmony Honeybush) as well as 17 craft beers from three breweries (Mountain Brewing Co., Stellies Beer and the Italian Job Brewery.
As always, cheeses from the area including Kasselshoop Cheese from Stilbaai and handmade cheese from the Albertinia area will also be on taste and will be available at great prices as well as local award-winning olives, olive oils and products from Kleinbergskloof Olive Estate and Kransfontein Olives.
Delicious food for the hungry will be for sale as well.
Entry at the door is R80 per person that will include a wine tasting glass as well as a booklet with information about the products at the expo. The expo will be from 17:00 to 21:00 on both evenings.
The annual Stilbaai Craft Beer, Gin & Wine Expo is the biggest Tasting Experience in Hessequa with the widest selection of wines, craft beers and craft gins under one roof.
WOW! Look what blogger Eveline Dietz spotted in Stilbaai during February – flamingos!
“Flamingos outside Bosbokduin in the Indian Ocean,” she posted on Instagram. (The Bosbokduin area overlooks the ancient fish traps at Skulpiesbaai on the one side and the ocean and coastline towards Jongensfontein about 8 kilometres away to the west.)
Well spotted, Eveline and thank you for capturing this and posting it!

Friday, 23 February 2019 – THIS made our Friday –
When Stilbaai became Style-baai !!
We share many photos by visitors and locals and sometimes we have to make use of the Translation button to understand the captions on Instagram.
Well, we did not mind Stilbaai being translated into Style-baai on a recent post by German visitor Yvonne!
Enjoy ‘StyleBaai’ this weekend!

The hiking trails through the Skulpiesbaai Nature Reserve, only a few metres away from the beach and the ocean, take hikers – or trail-runners – through a ‘forest’ of age old milkwood trees that has been formed in all shapes and sizes over the years. The trail is neat and relatively easy to do – just mind the heads for low hanging branches and be careful of the roots.
You can enter or exit the hiking trail(s) either from:
- the gravel parking lot at Skulpiesbaai’s fish traps,
- or a few smaller entrances from the gravel road leading to the parking lot,
- or from the beach between Morris Point and the Skulpiesbaai parking area,
- or from the ‘main’ entrance / exit close to the bathrooms on the gravel road between the harbour and Morris Point,
- or from opposite the Whale Look-out Point above the harbour.
You can not get lost and if you take a different route than planned, you might just end up at one of the other exits. Experience the breathtaking scenery on-route as well over the vast ocean and beautiful beach.

Art – from trash…
It is pretty and sad as it is from pieces of plastic found on Stilbaai’s beaches… 😥
We promote Clean Beaches and ask everyone to always do their bit to keep the beaches clean. Don’t litter and pick up what @curb_beachplastic visited Stilbaai and posted some ‘work’ from plastic collected at the beach.
Here are a few of their photos:

my little Pied Kingfisher, inspired by my holiday in Stilbaai last week on the beach near the river mouth. We saw one flying past looking for fish below him and then promptly shoot down into the water to catch a fish. It was so fast and so shallow my friend and I gasped! He is made entirely of plastic pollution found washed up on Stilbaai beach. #piedkingfisher #curb #plasticpollution #curbplasticart #stilbaai #beachplasticart #beachplastic #beachcleanups Credit to @xhovavx for the inspiring photography
